Entering the final round of the 1960 U.S. Open, few people gave Arnold Palmer a chance. He was seven strokes behind 54-hole leader Mike Souchak and even writers told him a 65 wouldn't be enough. Palmer promptly drove the short par-4 first hole and made a birdie en route to a 65. Meanwhile, the leaders faltered, leaving only Ben Hogan and 20-year-old amateur Jack Nicklaus with a chance. Hogan sank his hopes at the par-5 17th, while Nicklaus, playing with Hogan, three-putted 13 and 14 to fall out of contention. It would be Palmer's only U.S. Open title.
